Mosaic Fabrication
An art form started by the Sumerians, mosaics have been used to decorate homes and public buildings for more than 4000 years.
From the simplest floral motifs to complex geometric designs, this art form was taken to unimagined levels by the Greeks and the Romans and made it an emblem of good taste and wealth.
With the introduction of portrait and colored glass by the Byzantines, mosaics transcended from pavements to walls and ceiling applications.
Through the ages, mosaics have been rediscovered and reinvented, evolving into a rich tapestry of form, color, texture and style due to the variety of materials and unlimited creativity of the artists.
From ancient to modern, New World mosaics provide many opportunities to stimulate and stir the senses and to enrich and adorn your home.

MATERIALS
What makes the art of mosaic versatile is the fact that any material is suitable for
use as mosaic tesserae - these are the pieces that make up the mosaic. Depending upon the application, our team will discuss the suitability of some materials over others for every prospective project.
The aesthetic merit of a mosaic relies mostly on the skill and creativity of the artist but the use of materials plays a big part in the overall effect. They can range from pebbles and shells, to glass and smalti and, most commonly known for its classic roman look, marble.
STYLES
The mosaics of the Greek and the Roman period are perhaps the most well-known, however, the modern revival of mosaic art has included reproductions of these and their styles, including the early Greek pebble mosaics, the Byzantine, Florentine and Moroccan styles.
The artists at New World Ceramic, Mosaic & Stone have spent a lifetime studying not only mosaic art, but the decorative arts applied to ironwork, millwork, masonry and paint. Our artistic heritage gives us a unique aesthetic advantage, which is the ability to blend many influences from around the world and throughout history to achieve a new vision of mosaic art.
Our European-trained artists and craftspeople produce mosaics with a foundation based upon the long heritage of mosaic design through the ages.
Some of the most popular styles are described below:
Venetian style mosaics consists of larger pieces of stone, cut by hand to the desired shapes that make up the design and then treated to mimic the centuries-old floors similar to the ones in Basilica San Marco.
Venetian mosaic has a classic Old-World feel and works especially well in conjunction with Spanish or Italian architecture.
Roman style mosaic consists of tesserae - pieces of marble rectangles, triangles and squares - used together to form the design. The pieces may be polished or tumbled
to obtain a softer, aged look.
Florentine mosaics replicate the early Renaissance design style of inlay stone. The individual pieces of polished stone are cut by hand to the various shapes of the design.
